here is my story.

update.

on september 18th, 2009. william's adoption was finalized!!!
we are now a forever family!

********************

this is my story, and i am glad to finally be able to share it with you...

"your friend, yvonne had been arrested and she wants you to come pick up the baby", on august 14th, 2006, i became an instant mom with a single phone call.
i have not seen her since.

finally after 3 years in court, both birth parents rights have been terminated and we are waiting for the state to write and send our final report to the court. hopefully sometime soon. but they are very short staffed.

during the past three years, we have lived each year on less than $20k. william's specific needs have made it so that i have needed to be home and with william as full time as possible. it has been since this past spring that he has finally been able to attend pre-school without me!! this is a huge move forward for him.

in order to keep william safe, we have moved twice, changed cars a few times, and i have been on "red" alert, never feeling like i can let down my guard. for the first time, i was able to relax during my last week's vacation, since both birth parent's rights have finally been terminated!! the post adoption agreement that has been signed has a number of safety nets in place for us.

prior to 2006, i taught at the art institute of california, i ran a successful bridal gown design business, i managed employment agencies... and started and still run a community program that assists local single moms in need. how ironic! i was born and raised in menlo park, and graduated from ravenswood high school and menlo college...

i have an amazing amount of compassion for struggling single moms.
i know how it feels to count out change for a few gallons of gas, to be grateful that we will have milk, cheese, peanut butter, cereal and eggs through the WIC program, to be grateful that St. Anthony's will give us a hot lunch and breads/veggies/fruit, to be grateful that i can receive diapers through my own community program, to be grateful that we have medi-cal health insurance, to be grateful that we can have a roommate to help out with rent... but i also know how stressful it is to live "hand to mouth" and not to have any financial safety net.
we will be living on less than $20k a year again.

in addition, i have been dealing with chronic pain for the past 8 years. i was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, carpel tunnel and neuropathy...and have been on a pain med management program. my pain levels have been increasing this year, and i am now going to go a different direction. i am hoping that alternative treatments, chiropractic, massage and accupunture will allow me to get off my meds, and feel better. of course, medi-cal does not pay for any alternative medicine, or even therapy! so... between our easy little adoption that was suppose to be around $2k turned into a more complicated case that is now closer to $10k, and the need to build a health care fund...i am needing to reach out for help!

i am writing to find out if you know of any individuals, organizations, grants... that could assist us in any way.

i am happy to share our financials/budget... if requested. as you can imagine, my credit score has suffered significantly as well. while i am not proud of my "financials", i am very proud of my son, who is a well adjusted, happy, healthy and loving toddler!

thanks so much.

the next fund raising efforts are for william's future.

william is my beautiful, developmentally on track!!, soon to be adopted son. it is my turn to ask the community, (that has been so generous to other families during the years that i have run project warm hug), for help. what was to be a very simple paperwork adoption has become far more complicated... the birth father who has made no attempts to be a "father" for the past 3+ years is now contesting the adoption. so now, my adoption attorney's bill is far more than i ever expected or can manage.

please read through this blog to see what magic project warm hug has done for local moms...

i am working out the numbers for a fund raising event. please contact me personally for more information.

bigheartdesigns@yahoo.com

thanks so much.
with many hugs.
megan

and the final count is....

sadly, i am reporting that we did not receive anymore gift cards than last reported...

thanks to the two moms who sent in gift cards...

mother's day update.

hi all.

with less than a week away from mother's day, we are sadly short of gift cards to gift local moms in need with. so far we have 4 safeway cards and 2 target cards. i know that economy is affecting all of us, so i don't expect huge amounts on the cards. a $10.00 card will certainly brighten the day of a local mom in need.

at this point, we will not be creating baskets, just gifting the gifts we receive.
this way we can gift more moms in need...

moms who were gifted through our holiday adopt a family program will be the first moms to receive mother's day gifts.

safeway and target cards are the most useful.
they can be sent to:
174 spruce ave. menlo park ca 94025.
i will confirm when they have been received.

i will also do a pick up run later in the week. if you want a pick up
email me and i will add you to the list! i will likely do this on thursday am.

also....

diapers are always in need. size 6's and wipes are gold right now.
lotions, soaps, are a welcome gift as well.
a plate of home made cookies; cake...

i just want to let these moms know that there are not forgotten
on mother's day.

thanks!!

mother's day baskets.

hi all.

i am coordinating mother's day baskets for local moms in need. the baskets will actually be tote bags... that we will make.

these moms are in survival mode and never spend money on themselves.
the first baskets will go to the moms with gifted with our adopt a family program...
depending on the response, i would love to gift 50 moms...

let me know if you are interested. you do not have to sponsor a whole basket,
a batch of cookies. a couple soaps... $10 gift card... i want this to be afffordable
for all....

i am hoping to include:
goodies to eat- homemade cookies, sees chocolates.. .
soaps, lotions,... to pamper.
gift cards.

if you have a hair stylist who would donate their services... that would be awesome....

email me if you are interested.
oh and this is also a great project for a business, a girl scout troop.... a group of friends...

thanks so much,
megan!

Celebrate Motherhood!!

hi all.

whew. how can it already be february? for those of you who sent me your address for receipts, they were sent out this past weekend. it is not too late, if you still need one. just email me with your address.

moving into 2009. many of you were wanting to continue your giving.
so for our first giving project for 2009- i hope to be able to gift 30 moms in need with gift totes- full of goodies, gift cards, lotions/soaps, towels, ...rarely in the life of a mom in need do they receive gifts just for them. i would like these moms know how important they are... they are the glue that holds their families together....

so, if you are interested in participating... please let me know what you would like to give...
(receipts will be available)

gift cards, target, walmart, movies,
foods, homemade cookies, oranges, apples, ...
soaps and lotions...
anything else you are inspired to give....

we will be making and decorating the tote bags together!
it will be a fun project to for you and your kids.

also, since there continues to be an amazing amount of babies born- in need...
our $5.00 baby blankets will also be available. made by local moms.
we gave over 180 in december, it would be great to give 200 this spring.

if you have or work for a company that wants to get involved!! sponsoring
baby blankets is a great way to help keep our local babies in need warm...
for only $60, 12 baby blankets will be donated in your name.

let me know if you are interested... i will be matching up moms with moms
by march 1st!.

thanks so much!!

2009 Plans...

hi all.

this year is all about getting back to basics. and caring for local families in need.
they are not living in shelters, but living 2 and 3 families in one apartment in hopes to make ends meet.

project one:
clean out your closets, yes! all of them... and donate all
usable clothing, baby items and household items to:

st. anthony's in menlo park
on middlefield just before 5th avenue... if driving north..
drive into the parking lot and head to the back.
signs will direct you.
open mon- fri 10-4pm.

project two:
next time you go grocery shopping, buy a couple of extra cans of beans,
packages of rice, pasta... and donate to st. anthony's, as above.

project three:
next time you go shopping, purchase a gift card, to target, to safeway,...
and mail it to: 174 spruce ave. menlo park, ca 94025.
WHY?
i am starting this year, an emergency fund for single moms in need.
this fund will help support moms who need a little extra tlc. being
a single mom is challenging enough, but add in being financially challenged.
a $25 gift card can bring a smile to her face and a tear to her eye!

project four:
help with our fundraising efforts by buying and gifting flannel baby blankets.
each is $5.00! made by moms! my hope is that we can gift 100 a month! go to
paypal.com and use bigheartdesigns@yahoo.com as the recipient address.
the blankets will be donated to local moms in need. our 2009 budget- $6,000,
that's it!

thanks!!

Family DC

Mom
has had to quit her job to take care of her daughter and her husband.

Dad
had an accident 5 days after his daughter was born.
he has brain damage, blind in one eye and deaf in one ear.

Daughter
was born with medical complications.
has had extensive surgery. she has been
in the hospital since birth and has just
been released.
she is fed through a feeding tube and has
a central line.
the hospital released her without a
good care plan. and the mom
is in over her head.

daughter needs 18month to 2t clothing.
age appropriate toys, books.

family really needs rent assistance
so that they are not evicted at the end
of this month. we can set up an account
with her caseworker if needed.

i am sure that they would be grateful for
a target or safeway card for food and supplies.

Family EPA

young single mom with medical challenges.
birthdad is in jail.
son is 5 months old.

she is isolated and only travels on the bus.

mom could use a bus pass.
target or safeway card.

son- 6 month+ boys clothing.
age appropriate toys and books.

Family MP

struggling single mom.
with 3 year toddler.

like every other single mom
out there, she is struggling to
keep a roof over her family's head,
food in the frig and gas in her car.

a target or safeway card to
buy groceries and clothing.
gas card

size 6 diapers and wipes.

a warm parka size 5T boys
size 10 boys shoes and sox.

anything thomas train....

mom would love
a warm robe. size 3x.
fuzzy warm sox.

Project Warm Hug's
wish list.

i am included this because honestly i really
need some help...

earlier this year, i was about to close down this
project. the funding that i had hoped for didn't come
through, the amount of time i devote to this project
was cutting into the time i need to work to provide for
my family (single mom with a 3 year old son)....

but.... i know that there are many many single moms
out there who are all struggling like i am. i decided to
do just what i could to support this "invisible community"

so here is my wish list.

1- i would love for 100 fleece blankets to be sponsored.
at $5.00 a piece.- this is one of our fundraisers.
this blankets will be given to local moms in need.
all blankets are made by local moms.

2. i would love for 100 flannel blankets to be sponsored
at $20.00 a piece- this is also one of our fundraisers.
these blankets will be given to local moms in need.
all blankets are made by local moms.

3. i would love for our $6,000 budget for this year and same
for next year to be covered. this is tough since i am just
a mom trying to make a difference, not a formal 501c3.

4. i would love to have a couple of volunteers each month
help me to pick up donations and deliver them.

ok, here is my personal wish list.... since a few of you have asked.

i would love to have cable again, and a tv that works.

i would love a digital camera and printer....

i would love for my attorney bill to be paid so that i can finalize my
son's adoption.... (approx $1400)

i would love for my car to be paid off so that i don't have that payment to make.
($1700)

i would love for my dog's vet bill to be paid ($400).
this was for the vet to come to my house when my
dog was ill and passed away....

i would love for william to have his own room and for us
not to need to rent out our second bedroom... and to
live in a safer neighborhood....

i would love to be able to work this project full time....
and be able to provide for my family....

and i would love a new pair of earrings.

thanks, m

Holiday Giving Program- Update

Greetings to all!

I have some very good news about our holiday program.

So far, I have 20 families adopted (68 family members!)

and have 18 blankets sponsored.

Here is what is still needed-

I have 6 more families that need to gifted.

one is a single mom with 2 kids.
one is a mom and dad with 2 kids.
three are single moms with one child each
and one is mom and dad with 1 child.

Each can be gifted for under $100!

I am hoping to provide a healthy food basket for each family as well.
A gift card to safeway for $20 per family will take care of this project.
I will do the shopping!!

Also I have added a $5.00 fleece blanket! Now, our kids can also get
personally involved by sponsoring a blanket.
So when you sponsor, please note how many fleece and how many flannel
blankets you are interested in gifting...
My hope is to have 200 blankets sponsored. I already have requests
by local organizations for 200 blankets... and likely more as the nights
get colder...

Thank you all for all of your support so far.

October Update.

Hi.

It has been far too long since I have updated this blog. Time seems to fly by...
with too much to do and not enough time to do it in... I know you can all relate.

I was just reading the last post I made in July. I have copied some of it here for easy reading and have also realized that not a lot has changed....

As the economy is slipping, the need for donations has increased significantly.

I am so pleased to share that I was introduced to this great guy, Bennett who has started up a non-profit called the bay area diaper bank. Bennett has been able to donate diapers to all of the organizations that Project Warm Hug usually donates to.

All of his efforts are directed towards the "diaper need" in our county. Please contact him directly with donations of new diapers or hosting a diaper drive.
For more information, www.thebayareadiaperbank.org

For donations of clothing, cribs, strollers... I am asking families to donate directly to the St. Francis Center in Redwood City or to St Anthony's in Menlo Park.

Project Warm Hug will host our annual "Adopt a Family, Holiday Giving Program" again in November and December... This is going to be a really tough holiday season for a lot of local families.

What kind of gifts will we need??
a homemade dinner for a family.
a plateful of cookies.
movie tickets.
a target gift card.
a bag of groceries.

For those who would like to be matched with a specific family, a wish list of gifts will be available. If you know that you would like to adopt a family, please email me at bigheartdesigns@yahoo.com.

For those of you who are interested in helping specific families in need, I have a couple that can use some support.

Family A- Girl sz 10-12.clothing. A vacuum, and a blender.

Family B- Girl sz 6 and Boy sz 6. clothing and shoes. both size 10.

1- They are doing the best they can to provide for their families.
2- These families could be your next door neighbors.
3- These families are one paycheck away from being homeless.

Since Project Warm Hug is operating as a community program, not a non-profit organization, we are not able to directly give you a tax receipt for your donations.
You are able to receive a receipt from the organization that receives your donation.

What does $40.00 mean to you?? Take a moment to ponder this question...
A pedicure?
Lunch out with a friend?
A week's worth of lattes?
A new tee shirt you found at your favorite boutique?
A new outfit for your child??

To the families that we serve, $40.00
can mean a week's worth of groceries and diapers.
2 gallons of milk. $9.00
2 loaves of bread. $3.00
Fruit and Veggies. $10.00
A carton of eggs. $2.00
A pound or two of cheese $5.00
A jar of peanut butter $3.00
and a few misc items $2.00
and a small pack of diapers $6.00

just a reality check...

a $20.00 gift card would allow this family to add in Meat, Chicken, Soups, Cereal... to their
weekly grocery shop.

If you are so moved to help...
Please contact me for the address to send a gift card to.
174 spruce ave. menlo park. ca 94025.

I am just one mom who knows how tough it is... and wants to make a difference.
Thanks so much.

July Update.

Happy Summer!!

How quickly the summer flies by...

It has been wonderful to spend this past month concentrating on starting up my business- the big heart production company, which provides product development within the apparel and gift industries, for more in ck out- thebigheartproductioncompany.blogspot.com. - spending time with william who is SOOO 2 1/2 now!- traveling to our family cabin with my mom- and re-grouping....

At the same time, as the economy is slipping, the need for donations has increased significantly.
I am so pleased to share that I was introduced to this great guy, Bennett who has started up a non-profit called the bay area diaper bank. Project Warm Hug will host our annual "Adopt a Family, Holiday Giving Program" again in November and December... details to follow. If you know that you would like to adopt a family, please email me and let me know. projectwarmhug@yahoo.com

For those of you who are interested in helping specific families in need, I have a couple that can use some support.

Family M.- Family with 3 children, dad works construction, mom works very part-time, and cares for the children. They are really living on the edge. A gift card to Target or Safeway, would be really appreciated.

Family L.- This single mom and 7 year daughter were a part of our adopt a family program last season. I received a thank you note from them a week or so ago. The thank you was for the gift basket they received. They had found a jar of peanut butter hidden in it. This allowed them to have lunches for a week!! 6 months later. A gift card to Target, Safeway or Mervyn's would be greatly appreciated. OR if you would like to cook up a couple of dinners, batch of cookies... they would be so happy. This mom has been out of work for 6 months, has run out of unemployment, and continues to interview... but hasn't landed a job yet.

Family R.- Another single mom with a small child. Trying to make it but childcare is eating up most of her weekly payck. Any kind of giftcard would be a nice gift...

All of these families have a couple of things in common.
1- They are doing the best they can to provide for their families.
2- These families could be your next door neighbors.
3- These families are one paycheck away from being homeless.

Since Project Warm Hug is operating as a community program, not a non-profit organization,
we are not able to give you a tax receipt for your donations. I hope that you are still motivated to help us as you can. Hopefully a $20 gift card now and then would still fit in your giving plan.

What does $40.00 mean to you?? Take a moment to ponder this question...
