happy holidays!!
project warm hug is hosting it's 7th annual holiday giving program this year!
this year's program has created some unusual challenges for us!
my holiday program partner, tami is just barely back from maternity leave. she is the one who identifies the families that we gift! and i am just barely back to very part time work after a 3 week unexpected hospital stay...(dvts resulting from knee surgery). we talked at length today, and decided that the holiday season just wouldn't feel right if we didn't keep this program going this year.
so, here is what we decided. instead of identifying, coordinating, and gifting our usual 20+ familes, we would identify 6 families and make it a holiday season that would really make a difference in their lives. so along with gifts, we are hoping to also gift them with: gift cards, gas cards, a holiday feast, groceries, paper products, art and craft supplies, and more.
the six families will be decided upon tomorrow, and the list for gifts will be posted. i am going to post all of this on the blog. projectwarmhug.blogspot.com. please use the comment section to let me know how you are wanting to participate with a family. the blog will become our central communication tool so that i don't have to send out a ton of emails!!
part two- our blanket sponsorships as we have had in the past... yes, we are going to deliver flannel blankets as well. but not until january... $10 per blanket as last year!!
double sided cotton flannel blankets!! this year, i also have the kits to make your own!
fabric all cut and ready to sew, $5 a kit!!
at this point, PLEASE email me if you are interested in participating!!
thanks so much!!
happy holidays!
megan and tami.

year 7!! of our holiday giving program
greetings.
can you believe it? this is year 7 of project warm hug's holiday giving program.
started off with a promise i made to my dad to carry forward his humanitarian efforts in eastern europe by delivering fleece hats and scarves to the children's embassy in kosovo.
when i had to have surgery that fall, i wasn't able to travel so i decided to move my efforts to our own community. with the help of amazing women with the menlo park lds, over 300 sets of fleece hats and scarves were delivered to friends outside, the non profit my maternal grandmother had started over 50 years ago.
during the first 3 years, hundreds of fleece hats and scarves and flannel baby blankets have been delivered to local children in need.
then i met tami, the nutritionist/case worker with the pre to three program in san mateo county. we decided to join forces and start an adopt a family holiday program. she would identify the families in need, i would rally the community for giving. for three years, we have gifted over 100 families!!
this year, tami was gifted herself with an amazing baby girl!! she is on maternity leave until the holidays.
so, this year's program is going back to basics. we will be gifting flannel baby blankets to local moms with children in need. my hope is that we can deliver over 200!!
i have put kits together which include the fabrics, ribbons, and intructions so you can make them yourselves or we can make them for you. each pack is $7.50. this is a great project for families to do together... girl scout troups, church groups, etc...
let me know how many kits you would like!! and let's get sewing!!
i will be hosting a couple of days where we can make them together!! tba.
thanks for your continued support!!

since february 2nd....
since february 2nd... my car died (needed to replace asap with no funds available), my tooth broke (no dental insurance), my replacement car needed repairs, lost 2 weeks of work due to ankle surgery, found out that i need knee surgery, and so on...
major unexpected expenses, lost of income and no reserves.
many local moms, especially single moms are faced with similar challenges... hopefully not all at once or even in one year... but the reality is that if you are living hand to mouth, and have no reserves, any type of unexpected expense or lost of income is a major challenge.
i was reminded once again, why it is so important to be able to gift these moms with even the smallest of token of appreciation for all that they do in raising our next generation. the most important job out there!!
so in the spirit of gifting, i am re-vitalizing my baby blanket challenge... but revising the goal to a far more attainable one!! during our 2009 holiday program, we gifted 115 flannel baby blankets to local moms... i would like to put forth the challenge to gift 120 baby blankets to local moms by june 25th.
here is the original info....
while there is a lot of worldwide need right now, my focus is to not forget our local children in need.
help keep local babies warm this spring/summer...
there are hundreds of babies born every month in san mateo county
to very low income moms. many of these moms are a part of the county's
prenatal to three program that provides services to this group.
this spring/summer, quilted cotton flannel blankets will be made locally by single moms, and donated to this program. in turn, these lovely blankets will be given to local moms for their newborns.
please join me in providing blankets to local babies this spring/summer by sponsoring
a blanket for only $20.00. since the blankets will be donated to a local non-
profit, tax receipts will be available.
please use paypal.com for sponsorships
using bigheartdesigns@yahoo.com as the recipient address
or by sending a ck made out to:
megan rosenhart/blanket project,
174 spruce ave. menlo park. ca 94025.
i will keep tally on this blogsite with our totals!
thanks so much.

a slice of our life.
a week before christmas, i had a local mom email me to ask if i had any ideas for a project to do with her 4 year old daughter...on christmas day. the best i could do was to suggest that we make fleece scarves and pass them out to the kids in line at st. anthony's on 12/24. so we did.
on tuesday eve. julie came over and we cut out 80 scarves. she was kind enough to bring more fabric home and cut out some more.
on thursday, we met at my house and drove over to st. anthony's together. the one on middlefield between rwc and atherton. when we drove into the parking lot, it was filled with fire engines... the worst thoughts entered my mind. but, NOOOOO it was the toys for tots giveaway!! there were hundreds of kids and parents in line... fire engines everywhere and dozens of fire fighters... hope there weren't any emergencies that day!!
we found parking spaces, gathered our 4 year olds and the scarves and headed to the line of people... this is the line where you wait for lunch, a hot lunch. one you can receive 6 days a week without any question. it is actually well balanced!! at the end of the lunch line, you can also receive fresh breads, rolls, desserts, fruits and vegetables. (donated by safeway, trader joes, farmers markets, and others)
over 600 kids and adults receive lunch on a daily basis. the demographics aren't what you might think. lots of seniors, vets, moms, dads, kids, babies, some homeless. these folks are our neighbors.
julie's daughter and my son were loaded up with scarves and told to hand them out to kids. with our guidance, they did an amazing job!! what struck me is that every single child said thank you, and was honestly happy to receive a simple fleece scarf.
close to the end of our 120 scarves, just about 45 minutes... a family came up who had 5 kids. i asked if they had received their gifts from toys for tots. "no, they locked down the line, there are too many families...." said the mom. these kids were broken hearted. maybe they could come back tomorrow, but with no promises of toys.
they received scarves from two smiling toddlers! didn't make much difference. but some. i remembered that i had a $20 target card in my pocket. i pulled the mom over and gave it to her to buy something special for the family. i was sorry that i couldn't do more for her in the moment...
the last of our scarves were passed out. julie left with her daughter... and william and i went in to have lunch. wm loves their mac and cheese!! inside, i saw many of the kids wearing their new scarves! william and i got our lunch and sat down. we sat next to a family with a couple of these kids. to my surprise, the 7ish year old boy caught my eye to say thank you again!
we left about the same time as this family. their mom and i had been given bags of donated bread, veggies, fruits... as moms were both grateful for the services of st. anthony's. as moms we understood each other... we watched our kids laugh and play with each other as we walked towards our cars. we smiled as we offered a "merry christmas" to each other! we may see each other again. we may not. but, in this moment, we were friends.
in this short slice of life, i remembered why i do what i do... i also remembered why i am grateful for the services that have helped my family through a very tough last couple of years.
happy new year to all!! may 2010 bring you joy in the giving, happiness in the moment, and peace in your life.

response to the mom-
hi there
i have just finished up our adopt a family program... and winding down to enjoy the holidays myself. are you looking for something to do on christmas day itself? or during the vacation?
if we could stir up enough interest... we could make fleece scarves and hand them out to the kids in line at st anthony's on the 24th. 11am-1pm... we would need to make a couple of hundred at least.. would need 6-8 people and kids... i would make this happen if i had the help. we would need to raise about 50 cents per scarf for material... let me know what you think.... megan p.s. i got the go ahead from st. anthonys!! the location in menlo park/redwood city on middlefield.

MEGAN AND TAMI
Thanks so much for your generosity!!
This year, I am posting all of the families that we will be gifting. Please take a look at this list and let me know who you want to gift. You do NOT need to adopt a whole family, one person is just fine.
You also do NOT need to buy everything on their list. We try to gift around $25 per person and a special $50 family gift. Additional gift cards are always welcome. As are food baskets...
So, after you take a look... email me at bigheartdesigns@yahoo.com and let me know your thoughts. I will update this list daily. Please also give me your second choices...
All presents should be wrapped and labeled with the family and person's name.
All presents should available for pick up or drop off by December 6th!! Early
this year!!
Please let me know of any questions.
Thanks, Megan and Tami, prenatal to three program caseworker
Also, please make sure that you email me your name and address for receipt purposes. It is your job to track the amount you spend.
Also.... 60 of the 113 blankets were donated last week!! the other 53 have been spoken for and will be donated to the TAPP program. i am still taking sponsorships!! it would be great to reach at least 200. the last 87 will be donated to the adopt a family kids, as well as to the willow clinic for their moms in need. sponsorship is $15 per blanket and can be paid through paypal.com thanks so much!!

Also.... 60 of the 113 blankets were donated last week!! the other 53 have been spoken for and will be donated to the TAPP program. i am still taking sponsorships!! it would be great to reach at least 200. the last 87 will be donated to the adopt a family kids, as well as to the willow clinic for their moms in need. sponsorship is $15 per blanket and can be paid through paypal.com thanks so much!!

priorities for the next 6 weeks!!
hi
we have less than 6 weeks to complete our holiday giving program.
here is my thoughts on how to prioritize our efforts.
now until november 15th.
priority- sponsors for the remaining flannel blankets.
so far, we have 82 sponsored. have 212 remaining.
sponsorship is $15 a piece.
struggling single moms are making these blankets and are being
compensated for their efforts.
we have a number of organizations that have already requested
all of our finished blanket donations.
sponsors can use paypal.com and bigheartdesigns@yahoo.com
can be used for the recipient address. tax receipt will be provided
for all sponsorships.
november 16th- december 1st.
priorty- gifting families. this year we will be gifting 30 local families in need.
so far, we have 6 gifting families. need 24 more! each gifting
family will be providing gifts, gifts cards... for a local family in need.
businesses, departments, friends,... can join together to gift a family
as well. all 30 gifting families will be "assigned" their family by december 1st.
delivery of gifts will be by december 15th.
december 2nd- december 15th.
priority- sponsorships of food baskets and care baskets.
this is a perfect time for last minute
families who are interested in gifting to create baskets of food and care
products. these baskets will be given to local families in need.
i always get last minute requests for gifts and this is a perfect way of
making sure that this requests get gifted!

Families in Need. Donations requested.
Hi all.
We have started to collect the wish lists for our Adopt a Family holiday program. I wanted to post these asap, as these families could really use these "gifts" asap. If you have any of these items, or would like to donate any of the gift items.
Please contact me at bigheartdesigns@yahoo.com.
It is likely that at least another 20 families will be identified as a part of this year's program.
The majority of our families this year are a part of the county's prenatal to three program, a 501c3 organization. Tax receipts will be given!
I also have another 6 families that are also in need. These families are not a part of a county program, simply moms that I try to help as I can.
Thanks so much!!!
Megan
I have three families for you. I forgot how long it takes to do this.
I have their verbal consent to share this information with you. I used their first names but left off their last. As you will see I have a general list of household items and have left off and added items according to the family's request. I will try to work on the rest in the following weeks. Let me know if you need them sooner than I get them to you.
Take care,
Tami

here is my story.
update.
on september 18th, 2009. william's adoption was finalized!!!
we are now a forever family!
********************
this is my story, and i am glad to finally be able to share it with you...
"your friend, yvonne had been arrested and she wants you to come pick up the baby", on august 14th, 2006, i became an instant mom with a single phone call.
i have not seen her since.
finally after 3 years in court, both birth parents rights have been terminated and we are waiting for the state to write and send our final report to the court. hopefully sometime soon. but they are very short staffed.
during the past three years, we have lived each year on less than $20k. william's specific needs have made it so that i have needed to be home and with william as full time as possible. it has been since this past spring that he has finally been able to attend pre-school without me!! this is a huge move forward for him.
in order to keep william safe, we have moved twice, changed cars a few times, and i have been on "red" alert, never feeling like i can let down my guard. for the first time, i was able to relax during my last week's vacation, since both birth parent's rights have finally been terminated!! the post adoption agreement that has been signed has a number of safety nets in place for us.
prior to 2006, i taught at the art institute of california, i ran a successful bridal gown design business, i managed employment agencies... and started and still run a community program that assists local single moms in need. how ironic! i was born and raised in menlo park, and graduated from ravenswood high school and menlo college...
i have an amazing amount of compassion for struggling single moms.
i know how it feels to count out change for a few gallons of gas, to be grateful that we will have milk, cheese, peanut butter, cereal and eggs through the WIC program, to be grateful that St. Anthony's will give us a hot lunch and breads/veggies/fruit, to be grateful that i can receive diapers through my own community program, to be grateful that we have medi-cal health insurance, to be grateful that we can have a roommate to help out with rent... but i also know how stressful it is to live "hand to mouth" and not to have any financial safety net.
we will be living on less than $20k a year again.
in addition, i have been dealing with chronic pain for the past 8 years. i was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, carpel tunnel and neuropathy...and have been on a pain med management program. my pain levels have been increasing this year, and i am now going to go a different direction. i am hoping that alternative treatments, chiropractic, massage and accupunture will allow me to get off my meds, and feel better. of course, medi-cal does not pay for any alternative medicine, or even therapy! so... between our easy little adoption that was suppose to be around $2k turned into a more complicated case that is now closer to $10k, and the need to build a health care fund...i am needing to reach out for help!
i am writing to find out if you know of any individuals, organizations, grants... that could assist us in any way.
i am happy to share our financials/budget... if requested. as you can imagine, my credit score has suffered significantly as well. while i am not proud of my "financials", i am very proud of my son, who is a well adjusted, happy, healthy and loving toddler!
thanks so much.

the next fund raising efforts are for william's future.
william is my beautiful, developmentally on track!!, soon to be adopted son. it is my turn to ask the community, (that has been so generous to other families during the years that i have run project warm hug), for help. what was to be a very simple paperwork adoption has become far more complicated... the birth father who has made no attempts to be a "father" for the past 3+ years is now contesting the adoption. so now, my adoption attorney's bill is far more than i ever expected or can manage.
please read through this blog to see what magic project warm hug has done for local moms...
i am working out the numbers for a fund raising event. please contact me personally for more information.

thanks so much.
with many hugs.

mother's day update.
hi all.
with less than a week away from mother's day, we are sadly short of gift cards to gift local moms in need with. so far we have 4 safeway cards and 2 target cards. i know that economy is affecting all of us, so i don't expect huge amounts on the cards. a $10.00 card will certainly brighten the day of a local mom in need.
at this point, we will not be creating baskets, just gifting the gifts we receive.
this way we can gift more moms in need...
moms who were gifted through our holiday adopt a family program will be the first moms to receive mother's day gifts.
safeway and target cards are the most useful.
they can be sent to:
174 spruce ave. menlo park ca 94025.
i will confirm when they have been received.
i will also do a pick up run later in the week. if you want a pick up
email me and i will add you to the list! i will likely do this on thursday am.
also....
diapers are always in need. size 6's and wipes are gold right now.
lotions, soaps, are a welcome gift as well.
a plate of home made cookies; cake...
i just want to let these moms know that there are not forgotten
on mother's day.
thanks!!

mother's day baskets.
hi all.
i am coordinating mother's day baskets for local moms in need. the baskets will actually be tote bags... that we will make.
these moms are in survival mode and never spend money on themselves.
the first baskets will go to the moms with gifted with our adopt a family program...
depending on the response, i would love to gift 50 moms...
let me know if you are interested. you do not have to sponsor a whole basket,
a batch of cookies. a couple soaps... $10 gift card... i want this to be afffordable
for all....
i am hoping to include:
goodies to eat- homemade cookies, sees chocolates.. .
soaps, lotions,... to pamper.
gift cards.
if you have a hair stylist who would donate their services... that would be awesome....
email me if you are interested.
oh and this is also a great project for a business, a girl scout troop.... a group of friends...
thanks so much,
megan!
